The Atarazanas market is the most important fresh food market in Malaga.

It is a market with a lot of history, a building from the Muslim period, where it formerly served as a shipyard. We are surprised that it used to function as a shipyard, since it is not very close to the sea, right? Keep in mind that during the 19th and 20th centuries Malaga gained ground from the sea, leaving the center smaller, but the city larger.

It was then that at the end of the 19th century, as the building was already abandoned, the market began to be built. A translucent roof was placed, in order to better preserve food and at the same time to let in natural light, stained glass windows with particular designs related to the city were also installed.

The market has very friendly hours, from Monday to Saturday from 08:00 a.m. to 03:00 p.m., making it ideal to go for breakfast or lunch, as there are several restaurants and bars. It has the best selection of its fresh products, it is a good point to appreciate the gastronomy of Malaga, and try its typical dishes.

And if you want to cook, you can stop there to do the shopping. It will catch your attention to see the locals chatting, asking the vendor for the most seasoned tomato, the well-cleaned fish and the tastiest cheese. The market has hundreds of stalls, which are organized by product category. Sectors of fruits and vegetables, seafood and fish, meat and cold cuts, spices, nuts, well, everything!
